Pre Kitah Alef Explores Light and Shadow

Pre Kitah Alef’s first Atelier experience was an exploration of light and shadow. Morah Jessica set up the provocation in their classroom for safety so the children could explore these concepts in a safe and comfortable way.

The overhead lights were turned off, as one of the children was resting.

Morah Jessica set up two tunnels on the large, circular throw rug. A tube light was plugged in and ran through one of the tunnels. The children were attracted to the glowing green tunnel. Coby immediately began crawling through it and manipulated the tube light across his body. The other friends were still a bit wary, but eventually approached the tunnel.

A couple of small flashlights were also handed out to the children to explore with their Morahs.

Morah Jessica put one inside the other tunnel. Sammy crawled over to the tunnel to see what was causing the illumination. The children all wanted to hold the small flashlights. First they wanted to look at the bright light that it emitted. Morahs discouraged this to protect their eyes. They showed how the light could be directed away from them to illuminate the fabric of the tunnel and other parts of their body. The children also pointed the light at the ceiling and the stuffed animals. Some children covered the light with their hands, watching it fade away.

Next class we will introduce the element of reflection.
