Kitah Alef Paints with Textured Rollers
The final Atelier experience for the summer was painting with textured rollers.
Morah Jessica presented the children with several cardboard tubes coated in a variety of materials One tube was covered in pebbles, one was wrapped in burlap, one was covered with bubble wrap, one was wrapped with yarn, another was wrapped in goat fencing, one was wrapped with wire, and one was covered with sand paper.
Two trays were set up on the table. One contained a mixture of purple and blue tempera paint. Another had red, pink, and white paint.
The children dipped their chosen roller into tempera paint and then rolled it over a half sheet of watercolor paper.
The rollers each left a different print or pattern on the paper. As the children switched rollers and paint colors, they layered these prints over top of each other creating a sort-of tapestry of textures.
This sensory experience also enabled the children’s gross-motor development.
