Kitah Gimmel-1 Draws Fall Webworms

The Kitah Gimmel children have been spending a lot of time in the outdoor classroom this year. As the seasons have begun changing from summer to fall, we began to notice these webs covering the branches of the pecan tree. The Morahs did some research online and discovered these webs belonged to the Fall Webworm. The children began to notice the fuzzy caterpillars all over the playground.

During Art class, each child was offered a half sheet of white paper, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, and colored pens.Morah Jessica set up a sort-of terrarium with sticks, leaves, and log pieces in a large plastic bin. A few of the Fall webworms were placed inside the bin as drawing subjects.

Each child was given a pencil and eraser. They were then instructed to draw the Webworms. Together we talked about the shape of the worms. Morah asked each child, “What do you notice about the caterpillars?” Most of the children talked about the fur covering their bodies or their long shape. We also talked about the stripes along their sides. We will continue to observe the Fall Webworm through the upcoming seasons as they begin their metamorphosis into moths.
