Kitah Gimmel Weaves in the Atelier

Kitah Gimmel recently started weaving in their classroom. They have a built-in loom in their art center. Morah Jessica and Morah Dawn decided to follow this thread for Kitah Gimmel’s Fun Run pieces.

Morah Jessica made two 10x10 weaving frames. She removed the frames from two stretched canvases and attached chicken wire to the wood with a staple gun. The frames were then spray-painted white.

Next, the children were presented with ribbons, strings, and yarn in shades of blue, green, white, silver, and gold.

In small groups, the children chose a material to add to the frame.

The children enjoyed selecting from the variety of textures. There were translucent ribbons, fuzzy yarn, sleek gold trim, and more to choose from.

Morah tied the fabric to the wire and the child wove it up, down, and through the wire grid.

The first time we did this, a few of the children had difficulty and became frustrated. They kept getting their string caught around the edge of the frame.

The second time the children were offered this project, they came to the Atelier in smaller groups. They were able to relax and find the rhythm: up down up down.

During our third weaving session, the children added more ribbons, as well as some extra special touches. They were offered beaded twine, beadazzled ribbon, and rhinestones strung on to wire.
