Kitah Daled’s Nature Art and Experiences

During Enrichment, the Kitah Daled children often spend half the period outside. These children are constantly moving and very curious. Since we are lucky to live in such a green city, Morah Jessica decided to lean into that and provide lots of sensory, nature-based experiences for the children.

One of the first offerings was geodes, that the children could break open. The children were given safety goggles, work gloves, and small hammers. Everyone was very careful to make sure they had enough space so as not to injure another classmate while hammering.

Once they cracked open the geodes, they were offered magnifying glasses to examine the crystals contained inside.

Morah Jessica transferred the quartz pieces into a large bin that was then filled with play sand mixed with chunky glitter. The children were offered sand tools, tweezers and tongs, small wooden containers, and plastic test tubes to fill.

The children were also offered a station set with flowers and another with chalk and mortar and pestles. The children were able to grind up their own colorful powders. We talked about how these were often used in the past to make medicine. The children combined these materials and filled their tubes with their own special “medicines” and “potions.”
