Mud Painting with Kitah Bet
The children were presented with a variety of colored mud and sheets of heavy-weight, brown craft paper. The mud paint was a mixture of water, sand, and tempera paint.
The children used toothpicks, popsicle sticks, small forks, and swizzle sticks to apply the yellow, orange, brown, and red mud paint to their paper.
Some children dripped the mud and some splattered it. They realized that the fork and toothpick could make colored lines on the paper. The papers were a collage of dots, lines, and mounds of colored mud.
Elah asked if she could put mud on her bare feet. She began applying it to her toe nails. Morah Jessica asked if she liked the way that the mud felt on her skin. Elah said “Yes.” She began spreading the mud on the bottom of her feet and then stamped the paint onto the paper. This method started a trend. Westley said, “ I want to do it too!”
The next two children, Abie and Ezra, scooped the different colors of mud onto their papers and then stood up and began stomping and spreading the mud across their paper with their feet.
