Kitah Alef’s Eric Carle Collage
The Kitah Alef children are really interested in books. They ask their Morahs to read some of the same ones over, and over again. One of their favorites is Polar Bear, Polar Bear What Do You Hear?
During Atelier time, Morah Jessica offered the children an art experience based on this book. Each child made a painting based on an animal in the book. Inspired by Eric Carle’s art style, the children each painted a full piece of cardstock with tempera paint and paint scrapers. We tried our best to match our colors to the book. A couple of animals had spots, so those children used a piece of a pool noodle as a stamp to replicate that.
During their next art class, the children were given a large canvas, school glue, and paint brushes. They each painted the canvas with the glue. Next, the children each tore their painting from the week before, then laid out the torn pieces onto a canvas, making new shapes.
