Kitah Gimmel's Loose Part Wasp

As a class, Kitah Gimmel decided to create a giant bug to feature for Siyum night. Their interests in bugs and cardboard lead to this provocation. When deciding what insect they should make, the majority of children wanted to make a wasp.

The first step was forming the body of the insect out of cardboard. We drew each part of the wasp’s body onto cardboard scraps using pictures and books as reference. The children were given gloves, cardboard saws, and scissors. The children also used the Chomp saw (a totally safe cardboard cutting machine) to cut out the shapes. Finally, the children assembled the wasp's body together using tape and glue.

Following this, the children were presented with plastic loose parts including lids, broken toys, packaging, mini mirrors, cds, straws, and spools. They first made a plan by laying out their objects, then they glued the objects down using Tacky Glue.
