Summer Atelier:

Exploring Floral Ice

This week Morah Jessica presented the children with ice cubes encapsulating flowers, glitter, and essential oils. The children were also offered tongs, scoops, pipettes, turkey basters, funnels, and cups. As the ice began to melt, the children would gather flower petals, and glittering water into their various containers to make their own “potions.” They explored the material with their various senses. They spelled the flowers and herbs encased in the ice. They felt the cold drips of the ice as they stroked a cube along their arms or neck to cool down. They also gaped at the sparkling glitter left behind on their skin. Once the children were finished playing with the ice, we dumped the remaining flowers into one of the wading pools to make “spa water” for water play.
