Kitah Daled Makes Drums
The children often build their own drum sets and set up their own bands on the playground. They often use the blocks, pots, pans, and crates on the playground and reimagine them as their instruments. The children have been known to give impromptu performances as well. Seeing this interest, we decide to have the children make their own drums and use them in a performance at graduation.
The children were offered a variety of large, plastic containers with lids. They tested the containers by drumming on them to find their desired drum. The children selected duct tape to wrap around the lid, holding the two pieces together. Then they were given cups of school glue and glitter to mix together, making their own glitter glue.
Next, the children chose scraps of colorful paper, which they cut and glued onto their containers. They covered the tops and sides, coating the scrap paper with glitter glue. This helps to flatten the paper as well as add a beautiful, glittery element to the drums. Morah Jessica told the children that this process is called Decoupage. We talked about how this is similar to collaging (which they have done prior.)
