Kitah Daled Makes Clay Self Portraits
Kitah Daled were presented with balls of clay and a variety of loose parts. They were also each given a mirror to recreate their image on their clay circle.
The children first flattened the clay into circles using wooden rollers. This activity helps strengthen gross motor skills.
Next, they selected objects from jars of loose parts for their facial features. Rae chose chains for her hair. She used wire cutters to cut the metal into several strips and then pressed the lengths into the top of her clay circle. Many children were attracted to the small, square blue tiles. They used them as eyes, eyebrows, and mouths. Shiloh even used them as freckles!
Josie used a variety of colored sea glass to create a headband for her portrait.
Jackson also used sea glass on his portrait. He pointed out the row of glass pieces along the bottom edge of his clay. “Look Morah! Mine has a beard!” Barak chose two clear pieces of sea glass and placed them on either side of his clay circle saying, “These are my ears.”
Shimon wanted his face to have glasses like he does. He decided to use pieces of chain to form them around the eyes.
Rachelli also decided to use chains to create her face. She grabbed a clump of chains from the jar saying excitedly, “Look!”
This provocation continues the thread of clay sculpture from last year. The children still appear to enjoy this medium.
