Embroidery on Burlap with Kitah Daled
The children of Kitah Daled have been working with thread, wrapping and weaving during their morning classtime. During Enrichment, Morah Jessica recently introduced a complimentary experience. The children were presented with a large, backless frame containing a sheet of burlap and a basket filled with different colored pieces of yarn.
As the children approached the invitation (usually two at a time), they selected a piece of yarn. Morah attached a plastic yarn needle, knotting the end of the yarn. The children sat across from each other at the table. One child pushed the needle through the fabric and the other child pulled the yarn until it stopped at the knot. This child then selected another spot to push the needle through to the other child, creating a stitch. This continued until the strand of yarn was completed. The children cut the needle from the yarn and Morah then tied the tail at the back of the frame.
The children have become interested in making shapes. Westley said, “Let's make a triangle.” Mosie noticed a triangle shape with a line sticking out from the center, “Look! We made a dreidel.”
The children continue to be interested in sewing so we will provide more sewing opportunities.
