Gross Motor Art Explorations with Kitah Bet

This year the Kitah Bet children have been exploring various art mediums through experiences that engage their gross motor skills. They are building muscle while making art.

Chalk and Water

During art class, the children were offered sidewalk chalk taped to sticks of bamboo along with cups of water. They were told to use the chalk to draw on the fence. The children used the water to make their pigments more vibrant. They stretched to see how high up on the fence they could color. They would exclaim excitedly, “Look!” Once they had finished, the fence was striped  like a rainbow.

Fly Swatter Painting

Morah Mushky requested a tablecloth for Siyum night. During Kitah Bet’s art class, Morah Jessica hung a drop cloth over the acrylic windows on the playground. Beneath the cloth, a rainbow of tempera and gel paints were offered on trays along with matching fly swatters. The children selected a color and used their flyswatter to paint the canvas material. They each dipped their tool into the paint then dragged it across the fabric creating bright stripes.

The children switched colors as they worked to cover the beige fabric in vibrant color. Again, they used their painting implements to reach as high as they could, exclaiming “Look!” They stamped and stretched, until the entire cloth had become a rainbow of color.
