Pete the Cat “I Love My White Shoes” Painting-By Kitah Alef

The Kitah Alef children enjoy listening to stories. There are some books that they request for their Morah’s to read daily. One of their favorites is Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes, by James Dean and Eric Litwin. The Morahs wanted to offer an experience that combined their interest in painting with their love of books.

During art class, Morah Jessica set out washable gel and tempera paints in blue, white, brown, and red. The children took off their shoes and dipped a bare foot into one of the paints and pressed their foot onto the canvas. We talked about the different things that Pete stepped in during this process.

“I want to do it again!” -Benny

“It’s squishy.” -Miles

Next, some of the children repeated this process on transparency film. Once dry, the foot prints were cut out and glued on to the canvas to add dimension to the piece. Last, Morah Jessica copied some of the children’s favorite quotes from the book onto the canvas.
